I respectfully would say that recoil isn’t the issue. As long as you have a good comp and have tuned properly, having a viable defensive caliber (9mm+) recoil like a 22 would be ideal. Comps will get you part of the way there. It’s not “necessary”, but if you could, why not? All other things...
have trained with these guys before, and they’re are awesome. I’ve taken training from a lot of the big names out there (Pannone, VTAC, Pat Mac, etc) and these guys and their methodology is really cool. Their on demand pistol was the best pistol class I’ve ever taken. Vouch!
