Thank you for the reminder of salt wood. I had forgotten about that serious problem !Check carefully for rust and pitting on metal underneath the wood. Some wood was dried with salt to speed up the manufacturing process, leaving salt in the wood which rusted and pitted the metal underneath. Commonly called salt dried wood. For a while Browning was replacing the wood and polishing/refinishing the damaged metal...I doubt they still do that.
