those of you who like me are old enough to remember the 60's tv show the man from uncle remember the cool weapons they used. one Christmas my brother and I received from Santa the gun based on the p38 with the long barrel, removable shoulder stock and the scope. being nostalgic, I've been thinking of it and all the fun kids had before terminal political correctness infected this country. well, I have a question, if a feller took a p1/p38 added a 16" barrel a permanent shoulder stock and all the bells and whistles of the original would it be legal? in other words can you legally turn a pistol into a rifle?

I had the camera that when you push a button, a barrel came out of the side and a grip popped out of the bottom.

When I told my daughter that the old man on NCIS was once a heart throb, she looked at me like I was crazy. Remember how cool Ilya Kuryakin was with his white turtle neck ?

From what I understand is the walther p1/p38 post wars have a lined barrel and can be a pain to cut down and thread. Idk if ww2 vintage do or do not.
I always thought the p38/1 had a industrial look to it, border line steam punk. You could always find a p38k to build off...

From my forum and interweb scouring sit appears one can turn a pistol into a rifle. And one can even convert it back into a pistol. Making an sbr without a tax stamp is, of course, illegal.
I'm a little surprised someone with experience and knowledge with nfa and sbr's hasn't said anything yet. I saw a recommendation on xd talk to email the question to the batf, without a contact number. Which would force them to email you a response(in writing.)
I'm inclined to believe the response would be favorable, since they sell(sold) carbine kits for glocks and 1911(at least). If you ever get a solid answer, or if you ever create the thing, let me know. Back in 11 I thought a p38 with a snub nose would be the bees knees, when I looked it up I discovered the man from incle(and also the I spy or whatever, with a young Cosby) and found out the idea wasn't all that new.

from my understanding: (preface, I am not law, none of which I say can or should be interpreted as law. Taking my word as such or interpretation of my word may lead to criminal charges and should only be done after full legal advice by an attorney or agent of the law that is familiar and trained in the subject we speak)

One can convert a pistol to a rifle, but only in the correct order.
    1. Barrel must first be changed to legal rifle length barrel.
    2. Overall length must be considered in conversion of pistol to rifle
    3. Only then can one attach a buttstock.
    4. Once converted to a rifle, one can now attach a vertical grip

What was originally sold and transferred as a rifle can never be converted to a pistol, without legal NFA paperwork

To convert rifle BACK to pistol.
    3. Remove any vertical grips first
    2. Remove buttstock
    1. Reassemble as pistol with appropriate length barrel, but absolutely as pistol do not attach buttstock nor vertical grips.

When I was in 2nd grade (1967), I had an Ilya Kuryakin doll. Same size as the old G.I. Joe. He had a gun similar to the one Solo has in post #13.

I remember seeing that gun set on the shelves back in the day.
