I've been researching this for an AR build. Basically a straight walled 223 case. Seems like 2 companies have built a few barrels. I contacted them today. Hope to hear something soon.
What is the COAL ??
What would the bbl be sized to ??
I assume that you could use the 223/5.56 mags and bolt. What would be the working pressure ?? How fast would it push a 125gr pistol bullet out of a 18-20" bbl ?? ---- SAWMAN
I can post the links to the threads if you like Sawman. 358 cal 1:14 barrel 16 inch? I believe they are setting COAL to fit in a standard mag. Not sure about pressure but I saw where they were up to 35 remington velocities and testing higher. I saw where 357 max rimmed can hit 2700 fps with light bullets, 2200 with 200 grain good groups at 200 yds. I had to order some 327 federal cases from starline so I added 250 unprocessed 223 cases to my order. I read its as simple as running through a 357 magnum forming die, trim to length, and inside ream for handloading an unprocessed case.
I would guess not able to use 223/5.56 brass. I would think that it would be impossible to open .224" to .358".
This seems to be a great project. If a 20" AR was capeable of produceing 35Rem vels with the 180-220gr bullets, the gun would be a great closer range hog/deer thumper.
From reading thru the links, the weak point would be making or even buying brass and the "tall grass" loss thereof. ---- SAWMAN
The reason I came across this was I am buying a tc g2 contender frame when I get home. I've got a 327 federal barrel on the way. I want to get into reloading and like the idea of straight wall cases. I was already planning my bigger cartridge to play with and found out about 357 maximum. Then I started looking at case dimensions and saw a reference to 357 rimless max. I can hopefully build this in an AR and have a barrel built for my contender. I think it fits what im reading about smaller case head/higher pressure without stretching the frame on my contender. Bigger case heads and over pressure ruins the frame of a contender.
Mad Dog Weapons says it will be about 20 days before he can finish the blanks and start shipping. He made a batch of 10 that customers are playing with. My order is part of another batch of 10 that turned into a 20 barrel order. Now that its on his website for preorder, they are $325 shipped
There are 9 x39 cartridges at use in other countries for the AK for military and hunting purposes. There at one time was a .35 cal load on the AK case as a wild cat here. Some were rebarreling mini-30 rugers in it.
Honestly for hunting with a .35 rem like cartridge I would go to the older marlin in .35 remington.
looks like you searching for cartridge like the one below
Here are some new ones. In a locked breech rifle these would do what you want.
You would have to turn down the rim to get it to work. Might want to use an AK bolt.
