    When I lived in the mountains of NC everyone there used locust fence posts. Will not rot, no environmental issues, termite resistant. Sparks will fly when cutting one with a chainsaw! Might be worth a trip to North AL to get some. There was a 100 year old farm next to our place in the mountains and there were locust fence posts along the property line that were well over 60 years old and still serviceable.

    A club I used to belong to had a bunch of old pine structures. You could not even drive a nail into the structure. Old wood is tuff stuff!

    That was most likely yellow pine and not just any old wood. I think floor boards and some other lumber was selected from the harder parts of the trunk. The environmentalists are trying to replant the yellow pine forests.

    I salvaged some lumber from my grandparents house when my uncle had it torn down. Even the lap siding had to be pre-drilled before I could nail it on
