The round pictured has a .50 (BMG) projectile. It has a standard compression primer. The entire thing goes into the chamber. The "case" does not extract to the rear and does not combust (or vaporize) when fired. It is actually a up-scaled design of a cartridge that shot .22, 9mm, .30 and .45. Handguns and rifles were commercially produced. Machine guns were also built, tested and fired with success using the round pictured.
