As I've said for decades "I'm not going to choose a foreign language to learn based on what the greatest number of illegal aliens speak."

i.e., I will choose to learn one based on my respect for their society, not their disrespect for mine.

I took German and Latin in high school and I had to learn Spanish for a job. My Spanish is still pretty good but my German and Latin are gone.

If I had to just pick a language to immediately know by magic it would either be Japanese or Chinese as a nod to my Japanese karate and Shaolin kung fu days.
