I am seeing 4 different news articles discussing how locals on Maui are outraged at tourists for continue coming to the island and sunbathing at the local beaches.

While I do grieve for what happened there, I honestly don't understand why do they biting feeding hand.......

Don't they understand that Maui vacation is something you planning like year in advance? Don't they understand that many thousands dollars spent are often non-refundable? That for many, Maui vacation is a once in a lifetime event? That very same dollars will go to rebuild and to help?

They should be angry that in a 21 century, their fire department is outdated and understaffed.

We went to Maui for a friend's wedding nearly 20 years ago.

On the way to the hotels north of Lahaina (where the wedding was), we were stopped because there was a large grass wildfire (gasp) south of Lahaina, which blocked the road. So they took us to Maalaea Harbor where we paid a boat to take us (with our luggage) north to Lahiana harbor, where a taxi picked us up to go the rest of the way.

The tragedy isn't that there was a fire, it was that a the state & local government were so ill prepared to deal with it - either via prevention (prescribed burns, electrical shut offs, etc) or ways to combat the fires.

It’s just another liberal stronghold filled with people from another planet. Their government and government services are completely broken yet they complain about the one thing that keeps them from having to foot the entire bill for broken services.

Water is an issue throughout the islands. Not sure but I would imagine it played a part here. Maui is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Haleakala is amazing. Praying for those poor people. Unbelievable the PTB wasted zero time is coming for the land. Not sure how some of the mega rich properties were untouched by the fire. More to come I’m sure.

Will saltwater not put out a fire? Seems to me like some really piss poor leadership which I'm not surprised about being the lib state that it is. They were warned about this starting a long time back and were way unprepared for it. I feel for the folks in that Lahaina area, I couldn't imagine. But yeah, they should be welcoming all of the tourism they can get and be over there with collection plates in hand. Tourism is all you have over there, I imagine a very large percentage of the folks killed did or have at one time worked in the tourism industry.

In the middle of a fire you would have to get a fire truck or a tanker close enough to salt water to draft it in and fill the truck. Keeping it statically stored will rust out whatever it's in unless everything was stainless steel. For firefighting purposes it's not the best.

On another note what are they expecting tourists to do.. help? As mentioned paid vacations and they are doing their best to enjoy them.

I was more thinking about the aircraft that are often used to fight fires and are able to dip down loads of water...but yeah, looked to me like in most places a truck could have backed right up and sucked up water. At that point, I doubt anyone cared about rust. I wasn't referring to storing the salt water, I assume if they were doing that it would desalinated. Hard to claim water is a sparse resource when you are literally surrounded by it.

We are talking about liberal democrats here, they are conditioned to blame anyone but themselves. To a democrat socialist it’s always some one else’s fault.

We too are in in a perfect place for the same thing to happen. No matter how much water you pour on these if the wind is blowing that hard it will dry the treetops and race across them.
It's a by product of greed and laziness. We have super land owners who own more land than they can properly maintain. Even the states can't afford to do burns as needed.
So now all the land just sits and no one can use or maintain it. Historically natives would burn it regularly to make it easier to hunt animals. We never had this much brush as we do now. It's very unnatural.
Then even when we do get fires, we race to put them out.
People think, fir bad. It's a flawed logic.
Eventually they'll have to make laws that you can only own what you can afford to properly maintain.
If not, well keep seeing this over and over.
My woods next to me now aren't kept properly and is a super fire waiting to happen.
Too much land tied up in limbo.

There is no desalination plant at Lahaina. Most Hawaiians catch rainwater for their everyday use.

I can’t tell if this is god-tier trolling or the serious ramblings of a lunatic.

I saw a video tonight they have shut the road down and not letting supplies n. Hawaiians are using boats to get food and water to the residents. Over 1000 people in line to get passes to leave pick up meds etc and be able to come back, looting and armed robbery are rampant. I knew they had draconian anti gun laws.

I think the fire spread too fast for any department to gain control at the beginning. I doubt they have the equipment [helicopter/ buckets] needed to ferry any water source to drop on the fire of that size plus going to saltwater would require a major decision by command authorities . Air planes like scooping water bombers need very calm bodies of water to load but again these measures take time to implement .......which they did not have .

    Of course, I can!
Each day, 25,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, die from hunger and related causes. Each freaking day! You would expect all the good people of the world working 24/7 non stop so no kids die everyday from hunger. Do you know anyone loosing appetite over it? Do you expect people to put down their burgers?
    Same here.
Your pain is your pain. Don't expect the world to stop for you. Never gonna happen. Just be a realist.
