I am not hairy at all so I only change blades 2 or 3 times a year and shave at the end of my shower with a gillette sensor and gel cream

Must be nice, I burn one a week!

Also, if anyone has any straight razors laying around, any condition.

So I've been bitten by the bug and have accumulated Gillettes from the 20-30s, 40s, 50s and 60s and picked up some straitght razors as well.

    Wet Shaving Question

Any wet shavers in the crowd? For those not aware; wet shaving refers to shaving with old style safety razors, usually double edge. I recently got interested about the time our oldest son passed through. He gifted me a starter three piece razor, and I have since been hooked since. Favorite blade is currently the Astra, available for as little as 20 cents each online. Just found a source of well rated Russian made DE blades for 5 cents each. Cheap is a big draw, but I think it is a closer shave and more enjoyable too.

If there are any wet shavers out there, why not share info on local availability?

I was told by a co-worker that Hall's Hardware in Milton carries some shaving items including blades. I have only found Van Der Hagen's in local stores, and Personna in the base exchange on Corry so far. I am checking a CVS and a Walgreens on the way home. Will advise if I find anything!

I shave with a Parker (sometimes a 1954 Gillette) DE razor and Feather blades. I think I paid about $.30 each on amazon prime and I use each blade between 1 and 2 weeks. Basically is costs me less than $15/year for blades.

If I used a DE razor, we would be running out of toilet paper and band aids weekly. You have to take your time but they do a good job. Any body use a straight razor?

I've been using a DE for almost 3 years now and I cut myself the worst just last Friday. I guess I got in a hurry. Putting the styptic pencil to it made me dance around the bathroom.

    My favorites, so far:

    RazoRock XXX shaving soap
    Smells great, works even better

Crystal "Super +" blades, sometimes listed as Israeli Personnas

Go on Amazon and buy a variety pack of blades. You'll get five or ten each of about ten different brands. That's how I settled on the Crystal blades.

Thanks Tenn, not sure why I missed it; I was a member then, I even checked that to be sure! I must not have been ready yet. When I saw what the 5 blade cartridges were up to, that was my impulse to start. I had shaved with a straight edge for a while in the '80's, so it was a short learning curve for me. Love it!

    Amazing thread.

Tenn, might want to delete the one I had started....this is so much more in-depth. Still would like a resource for local sources, but doubt there is enough interest to support a combined thread or a sticky. I would like to say I just had my first Shea Butter shaving cream shave, and it was GREAT!

I only shave about once a week, but when I do, I use a safety razor and Barbasol, that gel stuff is for the birds. Blades are cheap and plentiful.

Buy a stick of arko soap for $3 or less and you'll have shaving cream for a year.

Soap and a safety razor is a recipe for pain. You need proper lubrication and condition ion or the blade will dry you out.
