My perception of WWII and Korea are that either side (infantry) would prefer to stick with a. Weapons they were trained to use. 2. Weapons that were logistically supported with ammo. In the Platoon/Squad the Leadership is not going to let Pvt Schmots carry a K98 or a MP40. There's no question that tankers, truckers, tracks and aviation folks picked up and utilized battlefield pickup subguns and pistols, especially when they provided greater firepower from their restricted spaces. Enemy combatants commonly used captured arms /munitions to outfit reserves, home guard and reconstituted Mil/LE of conquered countries. The 1911 was even produced under Nazi Germans authority in Norway (Pistole 657n). The Russians prized German machineguns. The Germans prized the Russian PPsH over the MP 40 for its cold weather functionality. The Russians would reuse anything and even had factories dedicated to repairing captured German tanks! It doesnt stop their, Germans used captured trucks, tanks and aircraft too. The Gemans wante 1911 war trophies as much as GI wanted Lugers!Finished watching a WW2 documentary that I'd never seen before. It was produced in the 60's and was narrated by the actual infantrymen that were there in the units in the corresponding video clips. I noticed that nobody talked about finding or using german captured SMG's or german pistols or taking any souvenirs. You know, stuff we all see in newer documentaries produced in modern times and narrated by people who were never there. Then it dawned on me that for as much as the "greatest generation" talked about the M1 and how it was the "greatest thing ever that won the war", that in all my books and in all my documentary DVD sets and in all the german battlefield excavations, metal detecting and bunker explorations videos, I never hear or see anything about the germans or any other enemy troops using or preferring any captured American small arms. I wonder if the germans were ordered not to, or if maybe, even back then, like 80 years ago, the "wonder nine" high capacity HiPowers, P38's and 30 rounder mag fed SMG/PCC's were recognized as superior CQB/MOUT weapons and there was absolutely no incentive for a german to pick up a heavy 8 shot 30 caliber. In fact, I'm beginning to think that all this post WW2 talk about the awesomeness of the M1 rifle and a certain single stack single action pistol design (that shall remain unnamed for the sole purpose of avoiding sacrilegious slander on such an iconic pistol design) is nothing more than the American propaganda machine covering up the fact that generally speaking the average American infantryman was armed with inferior weapons before, during and after WW2
